The Iron Trial by Holly BlackMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
Okay so after reading so many negative reviews; I just knew that I was going to have to experience this for myself.
So starting out I get the book for the sole reason that this was a Holly Black project. I completely ignored the fact that Cassandra Clare had a hand in it as well. How stupid I was to do that. I can definitely tell which author wrote which passage, and it seems that Black was doing a good majority of the leg-work with the world and magic building. Absolutely freaking awesome.
Clare took over most of the character building and guiding the plot. Which was a most epic fail. I can now see why so many reviews were screaming that this book was a huge rip-off of the Harry Potter series and other series as well.
Here's the similarities that I have found so far.
1. Callum Hunt is "The Boy Who Lived" through a massacre centered around the magical community.
2. Magical School
3. The protagonists are a trio of two boys and a girl.
4. The Testings (a mix of Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling and Unwanteds by Lisa McMann)
5. The uniforms.
The differences:
1. Call isn't an orphan and has a physical disability.
2. Aaron was the character who extended his friendship to Callum. He is the orphan in this story, and also seems to be this books "Chosen One"
I know that there must be much more that I haven't pointed out, but I've got a limited attention span to give you many more similarities. I'll give more review when I've reached editing mode.
